Significant Changes in Voter List in West Bengal Ahead of Elections
Major Updates on Voter Registration
A substantial alteration has occurred in the voter list of West Bengal. Following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the Election Commission released the final voter list on February 28, 2026, revealing that over 6.1 million names have been removed, while approximately 6 million names are still under review.
Key Statistics (According to the Election Commission):
- Before the SIR commenced (as of October 2025): Total voters stood at 76.6 million (76,637,529).
- Final roll released post-SIR shows total voters at 70.4 million (70,459,284).
- Total names removed: 6,178,245 (approximately 6.18 million), which includes 5.8 million from the draft roll and additional deletions thereafter. This indicates an 8% decline in total voters.
- Reasons for removal: Deceased – over 2.4 million, Absent – 1.2 million, Shifted – 1.9 million, and duplicates or others.
- 6,006,675 (around 6 million) names are currently categorized as 'Under Adjudication'. These are being reviewed by judicial magistrates/officials appointed by the Supreme Court. Depending on their decisions, these names may be added to or removed from supplementary lists. For now, they remain in the roll, but without final approval, voting could be affected.
- Gender breakdown: Male voters total 36 million, Female voters 34.4 million, and Third Gender 1,382.
- New additions: Approximately 182,000 from Form-6/6A.
This extensive process lasted for 116 days, featuring 100% physical verification. Political circles are abuzz with activity, especially with the upcoming assembly elections in April 2026. Both TMC and BJP are responding—some view this as a necessary 'purification', while others accuse it of being 'voter suppression'.
