Kolkata: This year, West Bengal will witness several important changes during the Durga Puja festivities. Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari has made a significant announcement regarding Mahashtami, declaring a complete ban on the sale of alcohol across the state. On this day, all liquor stores and bars will remain closed. The government has also introduced various facilities, including financial assistance and free electricity for puja committees.
Dry Day on Mahashtami
According to the Chief Minister, all liquor outlets will be shut on Mahashtami. Bars will also not serve alcohol. He emphasized that on the day when devotees pay homage to Goddess Durga, the sale of alcohol will be prohibited. This decision has been made considering the religious significance of Durga Puja.
Financial Aid for Low-Budget Pandal Organizers
The government has decided to provide financial assistance of up to ₹1 lakh to committees organizing Durga Puja on a smaller budget. However, the Chief Minister has urged financially capable and larger-budget puja committees not to seek government aid.
Free Electricity for Puja Pandal
During Durga Puja, puja committees will not have to pay for electricity. The government has announced the provision of free electricity for pandals. Electricity distribution companies have also agreed to this arrangement.
