Shubman Gill's T20I Participation in Doubt Ahead of South Africa Series
Uncertainty Surrounds Shubman Gill's Availability
The Indian cricket selectors are expected to announce the T20 squad for the upcoming five-match series against South Africa shortly. However, there are concerns regarding the availability of Shubman Gill, who serves as the T20I vice-captain.
The T20I matches are set to commence on December 9 in Cuttack, following the conclusion of the ODI series on December 6. The subsequent matches will take place in New Chandigarh on December 11, Dharamsala on December 14, Lucknow on December 17, and Ahmedabad on December 19.
Gill's Injury and Rehabilitation
Gill sustained a neck injury while batting during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, which led to him retiring hurt. Consequently, he missed the second Test, which India lost, and he is also absent from the ongoing three-match ODI series. Currently, he is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, leaving his participation in the T20I series against South Africa uncertain.
Selectors Consider Replacement Options
In light of Gill's potential absence, selectors are eyeing Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal as strong candidates to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma. Samson recently traveled with the T20I squad to Australia, although he only participated in two matches, batting once at No. 3. Jaiswal, who was not part of that squad, has been in impressive form, making him a viable option, according to reports.
Additionally, Riyan Parag is also being considered for a place in the 15-member squad. Parag last represented India in a T20I series against Bangladesh in 2024 and is currently leading Assam in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Hardik Pandya's Anticipated Return
Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is expected to make a comeback for India in the T20I series against South Africa. After suffering an injury during the Asia Cup earlier this year, Pandya made a remarkable return to competitive cricket, scoring an unbeaten 77 off 42 balls, leading Baroda to a thrilling seven-wicket victory over Punjab in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Hyderabad.
His impressive innings featured seven fours and four sixes, highlighting his explosive batting capabilities. Pandya also contributed with the ball, taking one wicket in his four-over spell, although he conceded 52 runs.
