Shubman Gill Urges Fierce Attitude from GT's Fast Bowlers Ahead of IPL Season

Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill has called for his fast bowlers to adopt a fierce attitude reminiscent of their head coach Ashish Nehra. During the Shubharambh 2026 event in Ahmedabad, Gill humorously referenced Nehra's intense reactions to dropped catches. With a strong bowling lineup, including Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj, GT aims to learn from past mistakes after a close elimination last season. Coach Nehra added a light-hearted touch, emphasizing that the players must take charge on the field. The Titans are set to begin their season against Punjab Kings on March 31.

Gill's Call for Intensity

Shubman Gill, the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT), has issued a subtle warning to rival teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He expressed his desire for his fast bowlers to embody the same intensity as their head coach, Ashish Nehra, who was known for his fiery demeanor during his playing career.

Gill and Nehra participated in the Shubharambh 2026 event in Ahmedabad, which celebrated the entire squad, franchise owners, partners, and fans. During a conversation with host Mandira Bedi, Gill emphasized the importance of his bowlers maintaining a fierce attitude, humorously referencing viral videos of Nehra expressing frustration at fielders for missed catches. Even MS Dhoni faced Nehra's ire when he dropped a catch against Pakistan early in his international career. Gill remarked, "I do not want my fast bowlers to be calm. I want them to be fierce just like Ashu Pa was. I'm sure you must have seen videos of how Ashu Pa acknowledged dropped catches when he was playing."

GT's Strong Bowling Lineup

The Gujarat Titans boast a formidable fast bowling lineup, featuring South Africa's Kagiso Rabada and India's Mohammed Siraj as key players. They are supported by experienced bowlers like Ishant Sharma, Luke Wood, Prasidh Krishna, Ashok Sharma, and Jason Holder. Notably, Prasidh Krishna ended the previous season with the Purple Cap, claiming 25 wickets in 19 matches at an impressive average of 19.52, including a four-wicket haul. Ishant and Holder bring veteran experience, while Luke Wood is a recognized name in franchise cricket. Ashok Sharma made a significant impact in the IPL after a stellar performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he was the joint-highest wicket-taker with 22 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 15.64, including two four-wicket hauls.

Learning from Past Mistakes

After a 20-run defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the eliminator, GT is determined to secure their second IPL trophy in just their fifth season. Captain Gill stated that the team's approach will reflect the same "determination, passion, and hunger" seen in previous seasons. He noted, "Even last year, we had a very successful season. We did not win the trophy, but that does not take away from the brand of cricket we played. We are now here to rectify the mistakes we made last season. We did fall short in some of the things."

Nehra's Humorous Take on Coaching

Coach Ashish Nehra also shared a light-hearted comment about the team's strategy, indicating that it is up to the players on the field to execute the plan while he observes from the sidelines. His humorous remark elicited laughter from the audience: "We would not be doing anything different. Sochna mujhe to kuch nahi hai. Inko hai, khelna inko hai, meine toh bahar baithna hai (I don't have to think anything. They have to, they have to play, I will be sitting outside)."

Upcoming Season Opener

The Gujarat Titans will kick off their season against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), last year's runners-up, on March 31 at New Chandigarh.
