Shubman Gill, the captain of India's Test and ODI teams, has shared insights into how his father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill, has significantly influenced his cricketing journey. Rising through the ranks of U19 cricket and domestic leagues, Gill has become a key player in India's batting order and leadership roles in both Tests and ODIs.
Since making his international debut in an ODI against New Zealand in 2019, Shubman has quickly established himself as one of the top opening batsmen globally, consistently delivering impressive performances across all formats. Currently, at 26 years old, he is focused on Test and ODI formats, as he is not part of the T20I squad, allowing him to concentrate on these two formats.

During a press conference for the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, Gill spoke about his father's unwavering support and dreams for him. He revealed that his father runs a free cricket academy in their village, where local children can learn and play the sport.
"My father has always dreamed of being a cricketer. He dedicates his time to the academy, where kids from the village come to play. Whenever he can, he visits the academy," Gill explained to reporters.
He also mentioned how young players show him videos of their performances, highlighting their skills and passion for cricket. Gill believes that his father's love for the game is a significant reason for his own success.
Shubman Gill's Upcoming Matches
Shubman Gill's last match was during the ODI series against England, where he emerged as India's top scorer with 188 runs, averaging 94.00 across three matches. After taking a break, he is set to rejoin the Indian squad in Mumbai on August 3, ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting August 15.
The upcoming series is crucial for Gill and the team, as they aim to secure valuable points in the World Test Championship (WTC). Currently positioned fifth on the WTC Points Table, a strong performance against Sri Lanka is essential for improving their standings and maintaining a chance for the Final.
As India's leading run-scorer in the ongoing WTC cycle, with 950 runs, including five centuries, Gill's contributions will be vital as the team prepares for these important away matches.
