Shubman Gill's Surprising Exclusion from T20 World Cup 2026

On December 20, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced the squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, and notably, Shubman Gill, the captain for ODI and Test formats, was not included. The announcement was made by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia at the organization's headquarters in Mumbai.

During the press conference, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav addressed the media. The selection committee retained most players from the recent T20I series against Australia and South Africa, with notable additions like Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh, while Jitesh Sharma was left out.

Gill's absence from the squad raised eyebrows, especially since he served as the T20I vice-captain. However, his recent performance has been underwhelming, with only 32 runs at an average of 10.67 in three matches during the T20I series against South Africa, before a foot injury sidelined him from the final match.

Reasons Behind Shubman Gill's Exclusion

Shubman Gill's struggles with scoring runs in T20Is since his return during the Asia Cup 2025 were evident. Despite being seen as a potential future captain for the T20I team, his recent form did not support his selection.

Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI chief selector, explained that Gill's lack of runs and the need for specific team combinations were pivotal in the decision to exclude him. He acknowledged Gill's talent but noted that he was currently not performing at his best.

"We recognize his quality as a player, but he is perhaps a bit short on runs at the moment," Agarkar stated. He further mentioned that team combinations played a significant role in the selection process, leading to Gill's unfortunate omission.

Team Dynamics and Future Prospects

Suryakumar Yadav, the T20I captain, echoed Agarkar's sentiments, emphasizing that the decision was based on team balance rather than Gill's form. He pointed out that the team needed a wicketkeeper at the top of the order, which influenced the selection.

"After the T20 World Cup (2024), we scored 200 runs in Sri Lanka with Gill in the lineup. We opted for a keeper at the top and Rinku or Washy lower down, which is why we have an extra keeper in the squad. There is no question regarding Gill's form," Yadav clarified.

Gill will also miss the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand in January. Following his exclusion from both the T20I series and the World Cup, he will participate only in the ODI segment of the home series against New Zealand starting January 11. Meanwhile, Axar Patel has been appointed as the vice-captain for the T20I series against New Zealand and the World Cup.
