Gill Supports Suthar for No. 8 Position
Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian Test team, has expressed his confidence in young all-rounder Manav Suthar to take on the No. 8 batting position. With the absence of regular all-rounders, Gill believes Suthar can enhance the batting lineup, highlighting his potential to evolve into a strong performer in Test cricket. The Indian team is set to kick off a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle on Saturday, which also marks their 600th Test match. Gill noted that while the team has opted for a more specialized lineup, Suthar's batting skills could provide the necessary balance. "Manav has the capability with the bat, and we trust he can deliver. Experience and confidence are crucial at this level, and those come from playing and scoring runs. We hope he shines in this series. His bowling skills are impressive, and he has the potential to be an excellent No. 8 batsman," Gill stated during the pre-match press briefing.
Team Morale Remains High Despite Key Absences
India is missing some vital players for this series, including star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is out due to a recurring knee issue, and batter Sai Sudharsan, who is sidelined with a toe injury. Despite these setbacks, Gill reassured that the team's morale remains intact and expressed confidence in the 15-member squad's ability to perform. "We maintain communication with the injured players and monitor their conditions closely. Sai's situation was unfortunate; we had hoped he could participate, but his recovery was slower than anticipated. In Test matches, taking risks is not advisable, unlike in shorter formats. While we were disappointed, it hasn't dampened our spirits. I believe any player from our squad can excel and secure a win under any circumstances," he remarked.

Auqib Nabi has been brought in to replace Bumrah, while Sarfaraz Khan has stepped in for Sudharsan. Gill mentioned that KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, the only players from the current squad who participated in India's last Test series in Sri Lanka back in 2017, have shared valuable insights with the team. "Their experiences and understanding of the game's flow are crucial. They have contributed significantly to our discussions," he added.
Selection Challenge for Second Pacer
The captain faces a tough decision regarding the selection of the second pacer, choosing between Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna, with Mohammed Siraj likely to secure a spot in the playing XI. "Both Gurnoor and Prasidh are talented bowlers who performed well in the practice match. Gurnoor's height gives him an advantage with bounce and pace, especially when conditions are challenging. Prasidh has been in exceptional form lately, both in red-ball and white-ball formats. Choosing just one will be a difficult task for us," Gill explained.
