Bumrah's Participation Under Review
In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India's Test captain, Shubman Gill, announced on Wednesday that the decision regarding seamer Jasprit Bumrah's involvement in the forthcoming Test series against the West Indies will be evaluated after each match. Gill emphasized that Bumrah's participation will hinge on the number of overs he bowls and his physical condition post-match. This topic was a significant point of discussion during the England series earlier this year, where it was decided that Bumrah would only play three out of five Tests to manage his workload.

"We will assess Bumrah's situation on a match-to-match basis, considering how long the Test lasts and the overs bowled by our fast bowlers. There are no pre-set decisions; we will make choices after each Test based on how our bowlers feel physically," Gill stated during a media interaction.

India is set to face the West Indies in a two-match Test series commencing on Thursday, October 2, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Gill's Performance as Captain
Shubman Gill has had a varied season in both red and white-ball formats. He took on the role of India's Test captain in May 2025 after the Indian Premier League and led the team in a five-match series against England. Gill made a notable impact, scoring four centuries during the series.
Transitioning Between Formats
After the England series, he was appointed vice-captain for India's T20 Asia Cup team. Transitioning from red-ball cricket in England to white-ball cricket in the UAE and back to red-ball cricket on a red-soil pitch just three days after winning the T20 Asia Cup, Gill acknowledged that switching from the shortest format to the longest is particularly challenging.
Leading Run-Scorer
In the series, Gill emerged as the top run-scorer, amassing 754 runs in 10 innings with an impressive average of 75.40, including four centuries, highlighted by a remarkable 269 and 161 during India's historic win in Birmingham in the second Test.
Asia Cup Performance
However, his performance in the Asia Cup was less stellar, where he scored only 127 runs at an average of 21.16. The slower pitches in the UAE, which favor spin, require batters to adopt a more cautious approach.
Mental vs Physical Fatigue
Gill further elaborated that for batters, the challenge is more mental than physical. He expressed his readiness for the upcoming series, stating, "Transitioning from the shortest to the longest format is likely the toughest. It's easier to move from Test to T20 or vice versa. I focus on getting into the right mindset, watching the ball closely, and determining my attacking and defensive areas. The mental aspect involves control and patience to adhere to this process."

"For a batsman, I believe it's more about mental fatigue than physical. Currently, I feel fresh and prepared. I will focus on what needs to be done this week and next week to make informed decisions," he concluded.
