Shubman Gill Takes the Helm as Test Captain

On June 15 in London, Shubman Gill, who never envisioned himself as the captain of the Indian cricket team, expressed his ambition to cultivate a team environment where every player feels "secure and happy."

As India embarks on a quest for their first Test series win in England since 2007, the opening match is set for June 20 in Leeds.

"I never even dreamed of being the captain of the Indian cricket team. Beyond the trophies, my main goal is to create a culture where everyone feels secure and content," Gill shared with a broadcaster.

However, he acknowledged that achieving this goal would be challenging. "I understand that it can be a tough environment, especially with the intense competition and the various squads we have. If I can accomplish this, it would be a significant achievement for me," he remarked.

Gill also credited Rohit Sharma, who stepped down from Test cricket on May 7, for providing a clear direction for him.

"Rohit may not appear aggressive, but he is quite tactical. His communication before, during, and after matches is always clear regarding his expectations from the players," Gill noted.

He expressed his desire to emulate Rohit's leadership style, which prioritized the team's success over individual accolades.

Gill also shared that he kept the news of his captaincy a secret even from his father, who has been a crucial support in his career.

"I doubt my father ever imagined I would become the Indian Test captain, just as I didn't. My childhood dreams were solely about playing for India and winning matches. He called me when the news broke, but I had known for a while and wanted to share it with him officially. Our conversation was very emotional once he learned about my new role," he recounted.
