Shubman Gill Achieves Historic Double Century at Edgbaston Test

Historic Performance by Shubman Gill
During the second day of the second Test match between India and England at Edgbaston, Indian captain Shubman Gill made headlines by scoring a remarkable double century. Despite dealing with back pain since the first day, Gill showcased his skill and determination, amassing a total of 269 runs before his dismissal. This achievement not only marks his personal best but also sets several records, surpassing those of his former teammate and captain, Virat Kohli.
Celebration and Team Spirit
Upon reaching his first double century with a single run, Gill removed his helmet and celebrated the milestone. The crowd at Edgbaston, who had previously booed him, responded with a standing ovation. The Indian team also showed their support, but it was Mohammed Siraj's gesture that stood out. Mimicking Gill's signature 'bow down' celebration, Siraj bowed to him, to which Gill reciprocated with a slight bow.
India Dominates Day 2 at Edgbaston
India took charge on Day 2 at Edgbaston, largely due to Gill's historic double century, scoring 269 runs off 387 balls. At just 24 years old, he became the first Indian to achieve a Test double century on English soil, breaking Sunil Gavaskar's record of 221. Gill's innings included 30 fours and 3 sixes, marking the highest individual Test score by an Indian in England.
He is now the sixth Indian captain to score a Test double hundred, joining the ranks of cricket legends like MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli. This innings also marked his second consecutive century as captain, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure after India found themselves at 24/2 on Day 1. He formed significant partnerships with Ravindra Jadeja (89 runs) and Washington Sundar (42 runs).
India concluded their innings at 587 runs in 151 overs, with England's Shoaib Bashir taking 3 wickets, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue claimed 2 wickets each.
In response, Akash Deep made an impact early on, dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in consecutive deliveries, while Siraj took out Zak Crawley. England ended the day at 77/3, trailing by 510 runs.
