Shreyas Iyer's Recent Performance and Team India's Goals

Shreyas Iyer's Captaincy Prospects Amid Team India's T20 World Cup Aspirations

Recently, under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian cricket team clinched the Asia Cup 2025 title and followed it up by winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. However, Suryakumar's performance has been a topic of concern, as he has struggled to score runs consistently over the past two years.

Looking ahead, the Indian team aims to secure the ICC T20 World Cup 2027 title, hoping to achieve a hat-trick of T20 World Cup victories. Consequently, Shreyas Iyer appears to be the only viable option for the team and the BCCI.

Challenges in Appointing Shreyas Iyer as Captain

A source from the BCCI informed a media outlet that they are exploring new captaincy options in light of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2027. However, appointing Shreyas Iyer as captain immediately might be premature. The source stated,

“Iyer last played a T20 match for India in 2023 and is not part of the current squad. Bringing him back and assigning him captaincy would be a significant decision.”

The BCCI source further mentioned,

“The focus has now shifted to the 2027 ODI World Cup, providing selectors some breathing room to plan for changes in T20I leadership.”

Shreyas Iyer's Success in IPL Leadership

Shreyas Iyer is recognized as one of the most successful captains in the IPL. His captaincy journey began in 2018 under challenging circumstances when Gautam Gambhir stepped down from leading the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) mid-season, handing the reins to this young batsman.

Under the mentorship of Ricky Ponting, Iyer emerged as a composed leader and a reliable middle-order batsman. In the following season, he led Delhi to their first-ever final appearance. His move to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022 further enhanced his success.

In 2024, he guided KKR to championship victory and later joined Punjab Kings, leading them to the finals as well. Despite these achievements, Iyer's international T20 career has not been as stable.
