Shreyas Iyer Takes Over as Mumbai Captain for Vijay Hazare Trophy
Mumbai's Leadership Change
Shreyas Iyer, the vice-captain of the Indian ODI team, has been appointed as the captain of Mumbai for the remaining matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26. This change comes after all-rounder Shardul Thakur was sidelined due to an injury, as reported by a sports news outlet.
Upcoming Matches and Group Standing
Mumbai, currently positioned second in Group C, is set to face Himachal Pradesh on January 6, followed by a match against Punjab on January 8, both scheduled in Jaipur. The team shares the same points as Punjab, with both having secured four victories and suffered one defeat.
Thakur's Injury Details
The 31-year-old Thakur has been absent from competitive cricket since October due to a severe spleen injury incurred while catching a ball during the third ODI against Australia, which resulted in internal bleeding and necessitated hospitalization.
Iyer's Recovery Journey
Iyer, who experienced a spleen laceration, missed the ODIs against South Africa in December. However, he has made significant progress in his recovery and is included in the squad for the ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11, pending clearance from the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
To aid his rehabilitation, Iyer participated in a practice match on January 2, successfully completing all drills without any issues. This tournament will provide him with valuable game experience ahead of the New Zealand ODIs.
Iyer's Leadership Qualities
The Mumbai Cricket Association expressed confidence in Iyer's leadership abilities, stating, "As an experienced international cricketer with proven leadership credentials, Shreyas Iyer brings calmness, tactical acumen, and a strong understanding of the game." They believe that under his guidance, the Mumbai team will continue to excel and maintain the rich legacy of Mumbai cricket.
Future Captaincy Considerations
With Mumbai likely to qualify for the knockout stages, there may be a need for a new captain if Iyer receives the green light to participate in the ODIs against New Zealand.
