Shreyas Iyer Set to Lead India's T20I Team as BCCI Plans Leadership Change

The BCCI is reportedly preparing to appoint Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of India's T20I team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. This decision comes as the team gears up for a series against Ireland and England following the IPL 2026. Despite Yadav's successful leadership in recent tournaments, his recent batting performance has raised concerns. Iyer, known for his impressive record in the IPL, is seen as a long-term leader for the upcoming T20 World Cup cycle. The shift aims to inject fresh energy into the team's leadership as they prepare for a busy international calendar.

Upcoming Changes in T20I Leadership

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 unfolds, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly gearing up for a shift in the T20I leadership ahead of the series against Ireland and England scheduled for June and July.

Following the IPL final on May 31, Team India is set to engage in a two-match T20I series against Ireland on June 26 and 28. This series marks the Men in Blue's first bilateral T20I engagement since their successful T20 World Cup title defense in March. Subsequently, the squad will travel to England for a five-match series commencing on July 1.

Shreyas Iyer Expected to Take Over Captaincy

Despite Suryakumar Yadav's successful tenure in leading Team India to a T20 World Cup title defense, the BCCI is reportedly looking to the future by considering a new captain. Reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer is poised to take over the captaincy from Yadav.

Iyer, who has been absent from the T20I setup since December 2023, is seen as a potential leader for a youthful squad, aiming to shape India's strategy for the upcoming T20 World Cup cycle.

Selectors Eyeing a Unified Leadership Structure

With a busy T20I calendar leading up to the T20 World Cup 2028 and the LA Olympics, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is contemplating appointing Iyer as captain for upcoming assignments to ensure cohesive leadership.

There is a growing call for Iyer to assume the T20I captaincy, given his commendable leadership record in the IPL, particularly with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS). Under Iyer's captaincy, KKR secured their third IPL title in 2024, and he led PBKS to their first final since 2014, finishing as runners-up.

Reasons Behind the Shift from Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav has an impressive record as T20I captain, winning 40 out of 52 matches, which translates to a win percentage of 76.9%. However, the BCCI is reportedly dissatisfied with his recent batting performance.

The board is said to be 'running out of patience' with Yadav's prolonged slump in form, particularly in high-pressure situations. Although he led India to victories in the Asia Cup 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026, his batting statistics have raised concerns among selectors.

Suryakumar's Recent Performance Under Scrutiny

Since taking on the full-time T20I captaincy in 2024, Yadav has scored 932 runs at an average of 25.88 and a strike rate of 152.03 over 45 matches. In 2025, he accumulated 702 runs at an average of 26 in 35 matches.

His struggles were particularly evident during the recent T20 World Cup, where a significant portion of his runs came from a single match against the USA. His performance in IPL 2026 has also been underwhelming, with only 195 runs at an average of 19.50 in 10 matches.

BCCI's Focus on Future Leadership

With the 2028 LA Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle approaching, the BCCI seems inclined to prioritize a younger, long-term leader like Shreyas Iyer.
