Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Wait for T20I Opportunity

Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Team India, has confirmed that young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his chance in the T20I lineup as the team gears up for the series opener against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22.

Sooryavanshi, who recently participated in the T20I series against the West Indies that concluded in a 2-2 draw, did not get to play any matches. The management opted to stick with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, despite Samson's inconsistent form.

Although he had a stellar performance in the Zimbabwe T20I series, scoring 151 runs and earning the Player of the Series title, along with his participation in the Asian Games 2026, Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the playing XI for the upcoming match remains uncertain. Iyer emphasized the importance of maintaining the team's winning momentum.

Iyer's Insights on Sooryavanshi's Role

As Team India prepares for the first match of the five-match series against New Zealand, Iyer addressed questions from the media regarding Sooryavanshi's potential role in the team.

During the press conference, Iyer highlighted that Sooryavanshi has ample time to develop and stressed the significance of keeping him engaged within the team environment rather than rushing him into the lineup.

"It's crucial for a talent like him to feel happy in the dressing room. He is very young and has many more opportunities ahead," Iyer remarked.

"It's not feasible for him to step in right now, as our openers are performing consistently and have even won the World Cup," he added.

Vaibhav's Development and Future Prospects

Iyer noted that while the current openers are scoring runs, Vaibhav is still young and has a bright future ahead. Gaining experience overseas and learning from seasoned players will be invaluable for his growth.

Sooryavanshi made his international debut in a T20I series against England, where he scored 14, 13, and 15 in his first three matches before being dropped. He later excelled in a three-match T20I series against New Zealand and the Asian Games 2026, where he had a significant run at the top of the order.

Iyer further explained that having Sooryavanshi experience overseas conditions is essential for his development, even if he has to wait for a regular starting position.

"When he plays overseas, he will gain insights into how to perform on these specific pitches," Iyer said. "Next time he encounters these conditions, he will be well-prepared and can also guide other teammates who are new to this environment."
