Shooting Incident in Mashhad Occurs Amid Khamenei's Funeral Ceremonies
Shooting in Mashhad
On Thursday, a tragic shooting in Mashhad, Iran, resulted in the deaths of two individuals, coinciding with the burial of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in his hometown. The incident took place around 10 PM in the Sarrafrazan district, as reported by Iran's state news agency IRNA.
Shamsghadri, the Deputy Governor for Security Affairs in Razavi Khorasan Province, clarified that the shooting stemmed from a personal conflict and was not linked to terrorism. Initial investigations indicated that the altercation involved two individuals, leading to one fatality, followed by a third person entering the fray, resulting in the second death. Both victims succumbed to gunfire.
Authorities are currently investigating the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Iranian officials have dismissed social media claims suggesting that the incident occurred near the Imam Reza shrine or was related to Khamenei's funeral.
Fars News reported that misleading accounts labeled as 'counter-revolutionary' falsely claimed a shooting near the shrine after the funeral. Their correspondent in Mashhad confirmed that no security issues arose around the Imam Reza shrine or along the funeral procession route. The actual shooting took place over 15 kilometers away from the Razavi Holy Shrine, specifically in the Sarrafrazan Boulevard area.
This shooting incident unfolded just hours after the burial of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which was attended by millions across Iran and Iraq. The final prayer at the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza was conducted by Khamenei's eldest son, Ayatollah Seyyed Mostafa Hosseini Khamenei. Despite a previously declared pause in hostilities during the mourning period, tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate.
