Manila, September 14: A tragic shooting incident occurred just before midnight on Sunday at a polling station in Cotabato City, located in the Maguindanao del Norte province of southern Philippines, resulting in three fatalities and 15 injuries.
This violence erupted ahead of the parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), which commenced on Monday to elect its inaugural parliament, as reported by a news agency.
Local authorities indicated that the chaos began when rival political groups clashed while waiting to vote, leading to physical altercations and ultimately gunfire in a densely populated area.
Reports from local media suggest that more than 2 million voters are eligible to participate in the election for 80 parliamentary seats contested by 13 different parties. In response to the potential for violence, security measures have been intensified across BARMM, with over 20,000 personnel deployed to polling locations and rapid response teams established.
This election is viewed as a pivotal moment for self-governance following years of conflict in the predominantly Muslim region.
Approximately 2.4 million voters are registered to vote, and international observers regard this election as a significant test of the regional autonomy established by a 2014 peace agreement between the Philippine government and Muslim separatists.
The autonomy framework aims to resolve a conflict that has resulted in over 120,000 deaths and displaced around 2 million individuals.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of this election in a video message, describing it as a milestone in BARMM's pursuit of enduring peace, democratic governance, and genuine self-determination, urging citizens to participate in this defining moment for both the region and the nation.
