Shocking Wedding Incident in Uttar Pradesh Highlights Dowry Issues
Dowry Practices Persist Despite Legal Prohibition
Although both giving and receiving dowry are illegal in India, the practice continues to thrive, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Here, dowry demands have become almost customary, with grooms' families presenting a list of their requirements to the brides' families before the wedding. In many cases, if the bride's family fails to meet these demands, the marriage is jeopardized even before it begins. It's not uncommon to hear stories of brides facing harassment from their in-laws for not providing sufficient dowry. This deeply ingrained tradition has become a curse for society, yet there seems to be no sign of change in this practice as India evolves.
A recent incident in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh has brought this issue to the forefront. The bride's family taught a lesson to a groom who was demanding a bullet motorcycle instead of a regular bike as dowry. The bride's relatives not only confronted the groom but also detained him until the police arrived. A video of the incident, showcasing the groom and his father being beaten, has gone viral on social media.
This incident took place in the village of Kesariya Salimpur on May 17, during the wedding of Naseem Ahmed's daughter. The groom, Mohammad Amir, was seated on stage as the wedding rituals commenced when an unexpected turn of events unfolded.
During the meal, the groom insisted on receiving a bullet motorcycle instead of a bike, a demand that the bride's family initially agreed to. They even provided a check for two lakh rupees for the booking. However, the groom and his father insisted that the bride would not be sent off until the motorcycle was delivered. This led to a rapid escalation of tensions, turning what was supposed to be a joyous occasion into a scene of chaos. When the motorcycle was not immediately available, the groom and his father resorted to abusive language and even tore up the check given by the bride's father.
The situation escalated to the point where the bride's family, with the help of villagers, detained the groom before giving him a severe beating. Upon learning of the groom's behavior, the bride refused to go to his house.
When the police arrived following a complaint from the bride's family, they rescued the groom and his father and took them to the station. The police have filed a case against the groom, his father, and five others for dowry harassment. Additionally, a counter-case has been registered against the bride's family based on the groom's complaint. Thus, two lives that had just vowed to stay together for eternity were torn apart due to the greed associated with dowry.
