Shocking Ritual: Couple Paraded for Marrying Within Their Clan in Odisha
Couple Faces Public Humiliation in Odisha
Koraput: In a disturbing incident, a young couple was reportedly tied to a wooden plough and paraded around their village in Koraput district, Odisha, on Sunday due to their marriage within the same clan, as confirmed by local authorities.
This event unfolded in Nadimeitiki village, located in a region predominantly inhabited by tribal communities.
A video that has circulated widely shows the couple being led through the village while bound to the plough.
However, the authenticity of this footage has not been independently verified.
Community members indicated that the couple's love marriage was deemed unacceptable since both individuals belonged to the same clan, breaching established tribal customs.
Following this public shaming, village elders allegedly conducted a 'purification ritual' aimed at 'cleansing' the community.
Nagesh Tandi, a local resident, stated, "Our traditions hold that such unions can bring bad luck, particularly impacting agricultural yields. This act served as a cautionary measure."
After the ritual, the couple was permitted to reside with the husband's family, according to Tandi.
Pramod Nayak, the officer in charge of Narayanpatna, confirmed that the police are aware of the viral video.
"A team has been dispatched to investigate the situation. The inquiry is ongoing," he noted.
This incident marks the second occurrence of such a ritual in the state within a week.
Earlier, in Rayagada district, another couple was similarly paraded with a yoke on their shoulders and compelled to plough a field in front of villagers and community leaders.
