Shocking Incident at Gopalpur Beach: College Student Victimized by Gang-Rape

Berhampur: In a distressing incident, Odisha Police have taken into custody ten individuals accused of gang-raping a college student while restraining her boyfriend at Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district.

The event reportedly occurred on the evening of June 15, as confirmed by a police spokesperson on Tuesday.

Authorities have stated that all ten suspects, including two main perpetrators, have been detained in connection with the case.

The situation came to light on Monday following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) at Gopalpur Police Station based on the victim's account.

According to reports, the victim, an undergraduate student from a local college, visited the beach with her boyfriend on Sunday evening. Around 8 PM, a group of ten youths from the Hinjilcut area approached them, taking advantage of their secluded location.

The group allegedly harassed the couple and blackmailed them after taking intimate photographs. Subsequently, some of the assailants restrained the boyfriend while three others forcibly took the victim to a nearby area and assaulted her.

Following the attack, the couple promptly reported the incident to the police, who quickly apprehended two of the suspects.

On Monday, police conducted raids in various locations within the Hinjilcut area, leading to the arrest of five additional suspects.

During the night between Monday and Tuesday, three fleeing suspects were captured by police as they attempted to escape to a neighboring state.

The victim's statement has been recorded, and a medical examination has been conducted.

Authorities are expected to formally charge the suspects and present them in court later today.

Local residents have expressed concerns regarding the safety measures at Gopalpur beach, a popular destination for tourists from Odisha and beyond.
