Court Appearance for Honeymoon Murder Suspect

Shillong: Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main suspect in the disturbing murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, has been brought to Shillong under heavy security and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Currently, she is under a three-day transit remand with the Meghalaya Police.

Raghuvanshi surrendered to authorities in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 7. She was then transported by road to Patna, followed by a flight to Kolkata, and subsequently to Guwahati.

Upon arrival at Guwahati airport, she was discreetly taken through the cargo area and brought to the Sadar police station in Shillong, where she spent the night after undergoing a mandatory medical check-up at Ganesh Das Hospital.

According to Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills, the Meghalaya Police secured a six-day transit remand for the accused apprehended in Madhya Pradesh and three days for those captured in Uttar Pradesh.

"All suspects are being transported to Shillong individually and will be presented in court," he noted.

In addition to Sonam, four other suspects—Raj Kushwaha, her alleged lover and the mastermind, along with Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Singh Chauhan—have also been taken to the Meghalaya capital. They will remain in custody until their court hearing.

A public outburst occurred at Indore airport as the four suspects were being escorted by police, where an enraged passenger slapped one of the masked individuals.

The identity of the assaulted suspect has not been disclosed.

Sonam and Raja were married on May 11, and just nine days later, on May 20, they left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya with a one-way ticket. By May 23, the couple had vanished.

A search operation was launched, and on June 4, Raja's body was found in a deep gorge, shocking the nation.

Following an extensive investigation, Sonam was arrested, marking a significant development in what police have dubbed 'Operation Honeymoon,' a special task force of 20 members created to track down those involved in the heinous crime.

All five suspects will now undergo further investigation by the Meghalaya Police.
