Central Drugs Laboratories Reports Drug Quality Issues

New Delhi: In a recent alert, the Central Drugs Laboratories disclosed that 46 drug samples from various manufacturers were deemed 'not of standard quality' (NSQ) for May, as reported by health ministry officials on Monday.

Additionally, State Drugs Testing Laboratories flagged 113 drug samples as NSQ.

As part of routine regulatory oversight, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) updates its portal monthly with lists of NSQ and counterfeit drugs.

A statement from the health ministry confirmed, "For May 2026, the Central Drugs Laboratories identified 46 drug samples as Not of Standard Quality, while State Drugs Testing Laboratories reported 113 such samples."

The classification of a drug sample as NSQ occurs when it fails to meet specific quality criteria. This failure pertains only to the tested batch and does not imply that other products on the market are affected.

Moreover, one drug sample from Assam was flagged as spurious, produced by unauthorized manufacturers under a brand name belonging to another company. This case is currently under investigation, and appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with relevant laws.

The ongoing identification of NSQ and counterfeit medications is a collaborative effort with state regulators to ensure these products are promptly removed from circulation.
