Arrest of Azad Mullick Unveils Voting Fraud

Kolkata: Azad Mullick, a Pakistani national, was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last month in Kolkata for his involvement in a significant fake passport scheme in West Bengal. Notably, he has cast his vote twice, first during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections and again in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

According to sources, the ED's investigation has uncovered that Mullick was registered as a voter in the Dum Dum-Uttar Assembly constituency located in the North 24 Parganas district, which falls under the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency.

During questioning by the ED, Mullick confessed to participating in both elections.

Upon his arrest in early April, officials seized documents indicating that he had falsely claimed to be a Bangladeshi citizen residing in India, having obtained Indian identity documents, including a passport, through fraudulent means.

Further investigations revealed that Mullick, who owns Mullick Trading Corporation, was also running a hawala operation from his home and was involved in supplying fake Indian passports to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

On April 29, the ED's lawyer informed a special court in Kolkata that Mullick was originally from Pakistan. He had first acquired Bangladeshi citizenship before obtaining Indian identity documents.

His original name was Azad Hossain, which he altered to Ahammed Hossain Azad after securing Bangladeshi citizenship through illicit methods.

In the fraudulent Indian passport, he was identified as Azad Mullick. During his arrest, authorities confiscated two counterfeit EPIC cards, several fake driving licenses, and four forged birth certificates from him.

Additionally, the ED has frozen a bank account linked to him, which contained a balance of Rs 2.62 crore.

Sources indicate that the ED is currently probing whether these funds were utilized for any anti-national activities within India.
