Shiv Sena Nominates Jyoti Waghmare for Rajya Sabha Elections Amid Political Maneuvering

Shiv Sena's Candidate for Rajya Sabha

The Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde has put forth Jyoti Waghmare as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. A total of seven candidates are expected to file nominations for seven seats, with the likelihood of uncontested elections in Maharashtra. Waghmare hails from Solapur in western Maharashtra and is recognized as a prominent leader from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. Currently serving as the party spokesperson, she has actively represented Dalit issues and the party's stance in public debates. Reports suggest that her nomination is viewed as an effort by the Shinde faction to enhance representation for socially marginalized communities in national politics.

BJP Announces Candidates for Rajya Sabha

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has revealed its four candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections from Maharashtra. The nominated individuals include Vinay Tawde, Ramdas Athawale, Maya Iwante, and Ramrao Wadkute. In addition to the BJP and the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), other allied parties within the Mahayuti coalition have also put forward candidates. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Ajit Pawar, has nominated Parth Pawar for a Rajya Sabha seat. On the opposition side, there is a possibility that the faction led by Sharad Pawar from the NCP will field a candidate from the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. With seven candidates vying for seven seats, the elections are likely to proceed without competition unless unexpected political developments arise during the nomination process.

Upcoming Rajya Sabha Elections Schedule

The Election Commission has announced that the biennial elections for 37 Rajya Sabha seats will take place on March 16. These elections will be held across ten states: Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Bihar. The necessity for these elections arises from the retirement of current Rajya Sabha members this year. Maharashtra holds the highest number of vacant seats at seven, followed by Tamil Nadu with six, and both West Bengal and Bihar with six each. Odisha will have four vacant seats, while Assam will see elections for three seats. Chhattisgarh and Haryana will each have two seats, with Telangana also having the same number. One seat will be contested in Himachal Pradesh. It is anticipated that the Congress party will strengthen its position in Telangana, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, where it is likely to secure seats.
