Political Turmoil in Maharashtra Over Infrastructure Projects

After the Maharashtra agency MMRDA decided to cancel the tender process for two major infrastructure projects in Thane, Shiv Sena (UBT) has called for the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday.

In response, the Congress party has demanded a judicial inquiry into all significant infrastructure projects in the state, alleging widespread corruption in light of MMRDA's decision.

The chairman of MMRDA is Urban Development Minister Shinde. During a press conference, Shiv Sena MLA Aaditya Thackeray urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to direct the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Enforcement Directorate (ED), or the Income Tax Department to investigate Shinde.

Meanwhile, Harshvardhan Sapkal, the head of the Maharashtra Congress unit, reiterated the call for a judicial probe into all mega infrastructure projects, accusing them of extensive corruption.

The Congress leader claimed that there has been a corruption of ₹3,000 crores in the Ghodbunder-Bhayander tunnel project and the Mumbai Elevated Road project. On Friday, MMRDA informed the Supreme Court that it would cancel two tenders related to the Gaymukh-Ghodbunder-Bhayander project and initiate a fresh bidding process to 'protect the broader public interest.'

The Supreme Court is currently hearing a petition from infrastructure giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T), challenging MMRDA's decision to disqualify it from bidding for the projects.
