Shiv Sena Criticizes BJP Over US Invitation to Pakistan Army Chief
Shiv Sena's Strong Reaction
On June 14, in Mumbai, the Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, expressed strong disapproval of the BJP-led central government's decision to invite Pakistan's Army Chief, General Syed Asim Munir, as the chief guest for the US Army Day. The party labeled this move a significant diplomatic blunder and an affront to India's ongoing battle against terrorism.
In a pointed editorial published in their official publication, Saamana, the Thackeray faction argued that this invitation not only undermines India's efforts to diplomatically isolate Pakistan regarding terrorism but also represents a 'deliberate attempt to weaken India's stance' under the current Modi administration.
The editorial criticized General Munir for his past derogatory remarks about Hindus, questioning why BJP supporters of Hindutva were not outraged by this honor bestowed upon him by the United States. It sarcastically suggested that these supporters might as well be worshipping President Trump.
The silence of the Modi government on this issue was also condemned, with the editorial stating, 'By inviting Munir, America has added insult to injury for India. If one claims that 11 years of Modi's governance have been wasted, how can that be disputed?'
The piece recalled the US's past actions, highlighting how Osama bin Laden was sheltered in Pakistan and subsequently killed by US forces, yet now the US chooses to honor the leader of the Pakistani military.
It pointed out that the Pakistani Army and ISI had provided refuge to Al-Qaeda's bin Laden, and despite this, the US has extended its hand to the same military by inviting its current chief.
The editorial also took issue with US Army General Michael Kurilla's recent remarks praising Pakistan's counter-terrorism efforts, labeling them as 'excessive' and contradictory to India's position. Kurilla's assertion that US relations with Pakistan would persist regardless of India's stance was also criticized.
General Munir was accused of perpetuating anti-India sentiments and glorifying terrorist acts as 'freedom struggles.' The editorial highlighted his involvement in violent acts against Hindus, questioning how he could be a guest of the US while Modi remains silent.
Regarding the situation in Kashmir, the editorial noted an increase in brutal attacks, including one in Pahalgam. It criticized US President Trump's intervention, which pressured Modi into a ceasefire, framing it not as a diplomatic victory but as capitulation.
The editorial further criticized the BJP's self-congratulatory narrative, stating that while BJP MPs return from international tours proclaiming Modi's diplomatic success, they overlook the reality of surrender disguised as patriotism. It noted that all parties united after the Pahalgam attack, yet the BJP has resumed its attacks on the opposition.
The editorial posed critical questions about Trump's mediation in the India-Pakistan conflict and Modi's perceived surrender under American pressure, questioning how Modi could be considered a world-class diplomat if he avoids answering such pressing inquiries.
In a mocking tone, it remarked on the BJP's claims of effective governance, asking what achievements Modi has to show for his 11 years in office. It concluded that even his most devoted supporters struggle to explain the outcomes of 'Operation Sindoor,' which was expected to decisively address Pakistan's actions. Instead, with China's backing, Pakistan appears to be gaining ground.
