In a significant development, Ramesh Mhatre, a Shiv Sena corporator, surrendered to the police on Sunday following a directive from the Bombay High Court. The court had revoked his bail and instructed him to present himself by 5 PM. Subsequently, he appeared at the Kalyan court under heavy police protection, where legal proceedings are ongoing. Earlier, on Saturday, the Bombay High Court had canceled Mhatre's bail in connection with an assault case involving doctors and medical staff at a civic hospital in Thane. The court mandated that he surrender by 5 PM on July 19, with the next hearing scheduled for July 22.

Police Action Against Additional Suspect

In a related move, law enforcement has taken action against another suspect in the case. Reports indicate that Sadhana Karande, the fifth accused, has been arrested. She is the mother of Priyanka Udhmale, who was receiving treatment at the Shastrinagar hospital and has also been implicated in the assault. A case was registered against her after she was identified in CCTV footage from the hospital during the incident. Although the police had previously issued a notice to her, they refrained from arresting her while her daughter was hospitalized.

Court's Intervention Accelerates Investigation

However, following the Bombay High Court's stern stance on the matter, police took Karande into custody from her residence last night. After Priyanka Udhmale was discharged from the hospital, Karande is expected to be presented in court today. The court's involvement has expedited the investigation, and further actions against the accused are anticipated in the coming days. Earlier this month, a video surfaced showing Mhatre and his associates assaulting two doctors and a medical staff member at the civic hospital, which sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.

Background of the Incident

The assault occurred when hospital staff advised a family to transfer their newborn to another facility. Following this incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) threatened to shut down clinics and hospitals in the area, leading to the filing of charges against Mhatre and five others.
