Hetmyer's Impactful Performance

Shimron Hetmyer, the West Indies batter, expressed that his explosive innings against Zimbabwe holds significant importance. He played a crucial role in leading his team to a 107-run victory during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Super 8 match held at the Wankhede Stadium.

Hetmyer was awarded Player of the Match for his remarkable score of 85 runs off just 34 deliveries, featuring seven boundaries and an equal number of sixes. This performance propelled the West Indies to a total of 254/6, marking the second-highest team score in T20 World Cup history.

Reflecting on His Performance

During the post-match presentation, Hetmyer reflected on his performance, stating, "It means a lot, especially since I didn't score much in the previous game. I aim to replicate my recent form from the last two months."

Batting at the No. 3 position, he noted his growing comfort in this role, saying, "It feels good. It has become easier as I have been doing it frequently. The support from everyone contributes to a more comfortable mindset."

Record-Equalling Achievement

Hetmyer matched the record for the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition, tying with Nicholas Pooran's record of 17 sixes set in the T20 World Cup 2024.

However, he downplayed his achievement, stating, "I am not overly focused on it. It feels good to reach such a milestone, but as a team, we haven't achieved anything significant yet; this is just one match."

Acknowledging Support and Mindset

The Caribbean batter attributed his recent success to the support of his family and a shift in his mindset. He mentioned, "My family back home has been a great support, which motivates me to perform better. I am trying not to overthink my batting, as I have done in the past. Now, I focus on reacting to the game as it unfolds."

West Indies' Commanding Victory

With this 107-run triumph, the West Indies ascended to the top of Group 1, boasting a strong net run rate of +5.350. After batting first, they set a formidable total of 254/6, the second-highest in T20 World Cup history. Hetmyer’s innings included a tournament-record fifty off just 19 balls, while Rovman Powell contributed 59 runs off 35 balls. Late contributions from Jason Holder and Sherfane Rutherford helped push the total beyond 250.

Spinner Gudakesh Motie excelled with figures of 4/28, dismantling Zimbabwe's middle order, while Akeal Hosein and the pace attack maintained pressure, leading to Zimbabwe's dismissal for 147 runs in 17.4 overs.
