Shilpa Kumari: India's Rising Star in Women's Javelin
A New Era in Indian Athletics
Neeraj Chopra's remarkable javelin throw at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics not only earned him a gold medal but also ignited a wave of talent in Indian athletics. While male athletes like Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav have made their mark, the women's javelin scene has been waiting for a standout star—until now.
A Transformative Experience
Shilpa Kumari, who holds the national record in the women's U-17 category, hails from a remote village in Gumla, Jharkhand. According to a release from the Sports Authority of India (SAI), she is now seen as a beacon of hope for women's javelin in India.
Witnessing Neeraj Chopra's Olympic victory on television with her neighbors was a pivotal moment for Shilpa. "Watching Neeraj win gold inspired me to pursue javelin. I aspire to follow in his footsteps and earn an Olympic medal," she shared with SAI Media. The celebration in her village after Chopra's win motivated her to set her sights on Olympic success.
Coach's Vision for a Star
Shilpa's journey took a significant turn during an athletics trial at the SAI center in Ranchi, where her coach, Binod Singh, recognized her potential. He recalls, "When I first saw her three years ago, I was struck by her natural talent. Although she was inexperienced, her strong throwing ability stood out. I knew she had a bright future ahead."
Under Singh's guidance, Shilpa has made remarkable progress. He noted, "Her family, being farmers, couldn't provide the necessary support for her athletic career. The training, facilities, and nutrition provided by SAI have been crucial in shaping her into a promising athlete."
National Recognition
Shilpa gained national attention in 2025 when she set a new U-17 women's record with a throw of 55.62m at the 69th National School Games. This achievement surpassed the previous U18 national record of 55.19m set by Deepika from Haryana in 2023, although it wasn't officially recognized by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) due to the event's lack of sanctioning by World Athletics.
Her official best throw of 45.90m was recorded at the 2025 Junior Nationals, where she placed fifth, marking an improvement of nearly 10 meters.
"My focus is solely on performing my best. If my throw isn't officially recognized, I aim to surpass it in my next competition," Shilpa stated.
Aiming for Olympic Glory
Currently, Shilpa is setting her sights on the Summer Youth Olympics, scheduled for October 31 to November 13, 2026, in Dakar, Senegal. "My immediate goal is to stand on the podium at the Youth Olympics, but ultimately, I want an Olympic medal," she expressed enthusiastically.
"I will dedicate my Olympic medal to Neeraj sir," she concluded.
