Sheikh Yousuf Afridi, Lashkar-e-Taiba Commander, Killed in Pakistan
Lashkar-e-Taiba Commander Shot Dead
Islamabad: In a shocking incident, Sheikh Yousuf Afridi, a commander of the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. Initial reports indicate that the attackers fired several shots at Afridi. He was known to be a close ally of Hafiz Saeed, the founder of LeT. Following the incident, Pakistani authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Afridi's death, with police suggesting it may have been a targeted assassination.
Background on Sheikh Yousuf Afridi: Afridi was recognized as a prominent figure within the terrorist organization, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa area. His responsibilities included recruiting and training new members for the group. As of now, no organization has claimed responsibility for his assassination.
Recent Attacks on Terror Figures: Afridi's death adds to a series of violent incidents targeting terrorists in Pakistan. Earlier this month, on April 16, Maulana Amir Hamza, another key figure in the LeT, was attacked by unknown assailants while in his vehicle. He was quickly taken to a hospital and reportedly survived the attack. Hamza is recognized as a significant ideologue within Pakistan's jihadist circles and has been closely associated with Hafiz Saeed, contributing to the ideological framework of LeT since the 1980s.
Additionally, Muhammad Tahir Anwar, the elder brother of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Maulana Masood Azhar, passed away last month under unclear circumstances, having been a vital figure within the organization. In March of the previous year, another high-ranking LeT operative, Abu Qatal, also known as Qatal Sindhi, was killed by unidentified gunmen in Jhelum district, Pakistan.
