Importance of National Unity Highlighted

On Saturday, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor underscored the significance of national unity and collaboration between the central and state governments in addressing challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia. His remarks followed a video conference held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with chief ministers and lieutenant governors to review preparations in light of recent developments in the region and their potential impact on India.

Political Differences Should Not Hinder National Interest

Speaking to a news agency in Kochi, Tharoor emphasized that despite political differences, the national interest must remain paramount. He stated, "We are united when it comes to national interests. Even if a UDF government is formed in Kerala today, we will not separate from the center. We must keep national interests in mind." He further noted that Kerala is deeply connected to the rest of the country, and state-level decisions align with broader national policies.

Call for Cooperative Federalism

Tharoor also stressed the need for cooperative federalism, asserting that both the central and state governments share responsibilities in governance. He remarked, "We will work together with the central government on these matters. This does not mean we have to politically agree during elections. Collaborating is a duty for both sides, and it should be mutual federalism." Welcoming diplomatic efforts, Tharoor mentioned the discussions between Prime Minister Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump as a positive development.

Maintaining Global Connections

He expressed satisfaction over the ongoing dialogue between the U.S. President and the Indian Prime Minister, stating that in this era of global uncertainty, it is crucial to maintain contact with major nations. Tharoor also highlighted the Indian Ministry of External Affairs' diplomatic initiatives with G7 countries as a significant step. Earlier this week, Modi spoke with Trump to discuss the deteriorating situation in West Asia, which continues to affect global energy markets and maritime security.
