Shashi Tharoor Emphasizes Government's Role in Managing Illegal Immigration
Government Accountability in Border Management
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has highlighted the government's responsibility in effectively managing India's borders, stating that the presence of illegal immigrants reflects systemic failures that need to be addressed through strict legal measures. Speaking to a news agency on Wednesday, Tharoor pointed out that if individuals are entering the country illegally or overstaying their visas, it indicates significant gaps in border management and immigration control.
Concerns Over Illegal Immigration
Tharoor questioned, "If illegal immigrants are entering our nation, isn't that a failure on our part? Shouldn't we enhance our border control?" He asserted that the government has the authority to take action against such violations. He emphasized that if anyone is in the country illegally or has overstayed their visa, the government is entitled to deport them. Therefore, he urged the government to fulfill its responsibilities in this regard.
Call for a Balanced Approach
Reiterating the importance of upholding the rule of law, Tharoor also stressed the need for a balanced and humane approach, especially in sensitive cross-border issues tied to political and humanitarian aspects. Furthermore, the senior Congress leader defended India's decision to allow former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to remain in the country, describing it as a step rooted in humanitarian values. Tharoor noted that by choosing not to send her back, India demonstrated the "right humanitarian spirit," referencing the longstanding relationship and Hasina's role as a reliable friend to India over the years.
Complexities of Deportation
He explained that matters related to deportation or extradition are governed by complex legal frameworks, including treaties and exceptions that require careful consideration. Tharoor remarked, "Very few people fully understand the legal issues, treaty obligations, and the exceptions involved," adding that such decisions should be left to the discretion of the government.
