Tharoor Supports Demolition Efforts in Karnataka

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has come forward to defend the demolition campaign initiated by the Karnataka government, which stirred significant unrest within the party at the end of last month. Tharoor asserted that the legal protocols were adhered to and that alternative arrangements were promised to the affected residents. The senior Congress figure emphasized that the land in question belonged to the government, stating that the residents were living there illegally. He pointed out that the area was essentially a dump site, contaminated by toxic waste, making it unsuitable for habitation.

Political Implications and Government Promises

Commenting on the controversy, Tharoor mentioned that residents were informed prior to the demolitions and argued that framing the issue solely based on the poverty of those affected is unjust. He noted that the government has committed to providing temporary housing and promised permanent solutions within five to six months. According to Tharoor, since a resolution is in place, there is no need to unnecessarily escalate the issue.

Legal Compliance and Criticism

The Congress leader acknowledged that there might be flaws in the relocation process and differences in opinions on its execution. However, he reiterated the commitment to finding solutions. Tharoor stated that all actions taken were in accordance with the law, mentioning that the Karnataka government acted following court directives, with notices issued prior to the demolitions in several cases. He also clarified that he has not visited Karnataka recently, thus refraining from forming a definitive opinion.

Background of the Controversy

The controversy erupted on December 20 when several families were evicted from the Kogila Layout near Yelahanka, leading to backlash from within the party and external criticism of the Karnataka government. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also condemned the action, labeling it an example of 'bulldozer raj.'
