Shashi Tharoor Critiques Pakistan's Role in West Asia Conflict Mediation
Tharoor's Disappointment Over Pakistan's Mediation Role
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has expressed his disappointment regarding Pakistan's significant involvement in efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in West Asia. He emphasized that India should have taken a diplomatic lead, considering its international standing and relationships with both parties involved. In response to reports about Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt's roles in secret mediation efforts between the U.S. and Iran, Tharoor noted that he had previously supported the Indian government's cautious approach, hoping that New Delhi would propose a constructive peace initiative.
Concerns Over Current Situation
Tharoor lamented the current state of affairs, stating, "It is somewhat embarrassing for all of us... I supported the government's restraint and silence regarding the Iran conflict because I hoped it would leverage this to establish peace, as Prime Minister Modi often advocates. However, the current outcomes have not met those expectations. Ironically, Pakistan is now attempting to mediate alongside Turkey and Egypt, which is disappointing to me."
Call for India to Lead Peace Initiatives
He reiterated his call for India to utilize its diplomatic goodwill to foster meaningful dialogue between the involved nations. Tharoor highlighted that New Delhi's balanced relationships could provide a unique advantage in initiating peace efforts. He remarked, "If peace talks occur in Pakistan, it does not involve India. For nearly three weeks, I have urged India to take a leading role in peace initiatives, leveraging its good relations with both sides. Now, it appears that Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey have taken that step. I wish them well; we all desire peace. However, India is not receiving any credit while Pakistan engages in peace talks."
Context of Tharoor's Remarks
These comments were made in the context of an all-party meeting chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, where the government reassured opposition leaders that India remains neutral amid the West Asia crisis. During the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri provided updates on energy security, shipping arrangements, and the safety of Indian citizens abroad.
