Shashi Tharoor Appointed to Lead All-Party Delegation Amid Congress Discontent
Tharoor Among Seven Leaders for Key Delegations
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has been selected as one of seven leaders to head All-Party Delegations to significant partner nations, including members of the UN Security Council, later this month. However, the Congress party did not officially list him among the four MPs designated for delegations aimed at articulating India's position on terrorism linked to Pakistan.
List of Delegation Leaders
The following Members of Parliament will lead the seven delegations:
1) Shashi Tharoor, Congress
2) Ravi Shankar Prasad, BJP
3) Sanjay Kumar Jha, JDU
4) Baijayant Panda, BJP
5) Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, DMK
6) Supriya Sule, NCP
7) Shrikant Eknath Shinde, Shiv Sena
Congress Submits Four Names
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted that on the previous morning, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju contacted Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, requesting the submission of four MPs' names for the delegations. The names submitted were:
1. Anand Sharma
2. Gaurav Gogoi
3. Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain
4. Raja Brar
Congress's Stance on Delegation Names
Expressing dissatisfaction with Tharoor's inclusion, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that the party would not alter the names of the four MPs proposed for the delegations. He described the government's actions as 'dishonest.'
This situation arose after the government included Tharoor in the list of seven MPs representing India at international forums, where they will discuss Operation Sindoor.
Surprise Over Government's Announcement
Ramesh expressed surprise at the government's announcement, stating, 'We were asked for names. We expected that the names we had given would be included. But when we saw the press release, we were surprised.' He emphasized that the party would not change the four names submitted.
He also mentioned that Rahul Gandhi had sent a letter to Rijiju confirming the names of the four MPs.
Tharoor's Response to the Invitation
In contrast, Shashi Tharoor expressed his gratitude for being invited to lead the all-party delegation to five key capitals. He shared on social media, 'I am honoured by the invitation of the government of India to lead an all-party delegation to five key capitals, to present our nation’s point of view on recent events. When national interest is involved, and my services are required, I will not be found wanting. Jai Hind.'
