Shashi Tharoor Addresses Criticism from Congress Members Over Recent Remarks
Tharoor's Response to Party Criticism
On Friday, Shashi Tharoor, a prominent Congress leader and head of the all-Party Delegation, addressed the backlash he received from fellow party members regarding his recent comments. He mentioned that he is not expecting any direct feedback since he has not been informed of any issues personally. Tharoor emphasized that much of what he is aware of comes from media reports, some of which he considers speculative. He affirmed that the delegation was cohesive, well-prepared, and effectively communicated the details surrounding the Pahalgam terror attack, including Pakistan's role and India's Operation Sindoor response.
Tharoor's Statements in Detail
In an interview, Tharoor indicated that he would review the criticisms from Congress leaders upon his return to India. He stressed the importance of recognizing the unity displayed by the all-party delegation during their mission.
“There will be a time for internal discussions when I return. I’m not expecting anything because I haven’t received any direct communication. What I see is largely from the media, and some of it is speculative. However, I believe we are currently in a situation where the country is united, and that unity was evident in the delegation,” Tharoor stated.
Earlier, on June 1, Tharoor had underscored the delegation's goal of informing the international community about India's firm stance on terrorism and its responses while engaging with global counterparts. He reiterated that the nation stands united at this critical time.
Background of the Controversy
Tharoor faced criticism from various party leaders who labeled him a 'Spokesperson for the BJP' due to his remarks made in Panama. He had pointed out that India's approach to terrorism has evolved, indicating that terrorists now understand they will face consequences. His references to the Uri Surgical Strike and Balakot Air Strike, both executed during Prime Minister Modi's administration, did not sit well with some Congress members.
Leaders such as Udit Raj, Pawan Khera, and Jairam Ramesh expressed their discontent, accusing Tharoor of damaging the party's reputation and undermining the achievements of the UPA in combating terrorism.
Udit Raj remarked, “Shashi Tharoor is acting as a spokesperson for the BJP, promoting what the BJP leaders are hesitant to say. Does he even recognize the efforts of previous governments? The current administration is taking undue credit for the Indian Armed Forces' actions. Tharoor has become a mouthpiece for the BJP's publicity efforts.”
