Shane Watson Lauds Young Indian Cricketers for Their Unique Skills
Watson's Admiration for Indian Cricket Talent
Shane Watson has expressed his admiration for the young Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, highlighting his impressive power-hitting skills and fearless batting style. The former Australian all-rounder also commended Shreyas Iyer, the newly appointed T20I captain of India, for his exceptional ability to score runs on the off-side, and praised Jasprit Bumrah for his skill in delivering change-of-pace yorkers.
Watson's Desired Qualities from Indian Players
During a Kabuni event held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, Watson shared three key attributes he wishes to adopt from current Indian cricketers. He began with 15-year-old Suryavanshi, noting his explosive power-hitting and fearless approach to batting. Watson remarked, "First on my list is Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who possesses remarkable power across the field, not just straight or leg-side but also over the off-side. His fearless mindset is commendable; he plays without the fear of getting out, which was a challenge I faced during my career," as stated in a video shared with a news outlet.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi: A Record-Breaking Talent
Recently, Suryavanshi was included in India's T20I squads for upcoming tours to Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games. This achievement makes him the youngest player ever selected for the Indian national team, surpassing a 36-year-old record previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at the age of 16 against Pakistan in 1989.
Shreyas Iyer: Mastery Over Off-Side Shots
Watson also praised Shreyas Iyer for his remarkable ability to hit the ball powerfully over the off-side, particularly targeting cover and mid-off against both pace and spin bowlers. He described this skill as rare and incredibly valuable, stating, "Shreyas Iyer's capability to strike the ball with power over the off-side is something he may not fully appreciate. He executes it effortlessly, whether facing fast bowlers or spinners."
Jasprit Bumrah: The Art of Deceptive Bowling
Additionally, Watson expressed his desire to possess Jasprit Bumrah's skill in varying his bowling pace and executing yorkers, a talent he felt he lacked during his playing days. He commented, "I would give anything to have had Jasprit Bumrah's ability to change pace and deliver yorkers effectively. It's a skill I never mastered to that level."
