Court Imposes Travel Restrictions on Shakib Al Hasan

A court in Dhaka has enforced a travel restriction on former Bangladeshi all-rounder and politician Shakib Al Hasan. This decision follows allegations regarding his involvement in dubious financial dealings. Shakib, who has been active in politics with the ruling Awami League, is now unable to leave Bangladesh, along with 15 other individuals. They are all under suspicion for allegedly transferring substantial amounts of money through the stock market, breaching financial regulations.

Details of the Allegations

The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge, Md Zakir Hossain, after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed two petitions. The documents indicate that Shakib and his associates engaged in questionable transactions totaling Tk 8.97 crore and Tk 4.48 crore. The ACC claims these actions were intended to hide and misappropriate funds, violating Section 19(1) of Rule 24(3) of the microcredit law.

Impact on Shakib's Career

As a result of this ruling, Shakib is barred from boarding any flights and leaving the country until further notice from the court. His legal representatives have not yet made a public statement. The 38-year-old cricketer, who recently made a comeback to the sport after a six-month hiatus, now faces significant challenges off the field. His cricketing future is uncertain as the legal proceedings continue in Dhaka.

Political and Cricketing Uncertainty

Shakib's career, already marred by controversy, is now facing additional challenges. His last appearance for Bangladesh was in a Test match against India in October 2024. Following that, a dispute regarding his bowling action led to his absence from professional leagues. His return during the Pakistan Super League in May was anticipated as a new beginning, but disappointing performances—scoring two ducks and taking only one wicket—have raised doubts about his form.

Future Prospects in Politics and Cricket

Moreover, Shakib's political aspirations are in jeopardy due to instability within the ruling party. His intention to retire from Test cricket against South Africa has been postponed amid this political chaos. Additionally, he was not included in the squad for Bangladesh's preparations for the Champions Trophy.

In the meantime, the Bangladesh cricket team is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from June 17 to June 29 for two Test matches, followed by a series of three ODIs and three T20Is. Shakib's participation in these upcoming matches will depend on the resolution of his legal issues in Dhaka.
