The Shakh Mandi Mahotsav has commenced, showcasing international films and cultural expressions while addressing significant social themes, including the pressing issue of female foeticide.
On Saturday, the screen at Paddal transformed into a platform for narratives that challenge societal norms and provoke thought among viewers.
This nine-day festival, organized by the Society for Himachal Art, Culture, Knowledge and Heritage (SHAKH), launched at the newly established auditorium at Paddal Ground, aiming to connect meaningful cinema with the community.
The event was inaugurated by Mandi's Additional Deputy Commissioner, Priyanshu Ghatak, IAS, who lit the ceremonial lamp and emphasized the festival's role as a vital platform for films that convey strong social messages relevant to contemporary society.
Ghatak remarked on the potential of cinema to transcend mere entertainment, highlighting its ability to address societal issues. He noted that films with impactful narratives could inspire audiences to reflect on social practices and potentially alter mindsets.
The festival's opening film, "End of a Beginning," encapsulated this vision.
Directed by Ram Pal Mallik, the film tackles the sensitive topic of female foeticide, narrating the story of an unborn girl and the circumstances leading to her demise, thereby confronting a social issue that requires urgent public discourse. Shalavi Sharma stars as the female lead, with co-director Pushp Raj Pushpi also present at the event.
The ADC praised the film for its profound message, which he believes will resonate with viewers. He expressed a desire to arrange screenings in schools around Daughters’ Day to promote discussions about the importance of the girl child.
The opening ceremony attracted attendees from various sectors, including education, culture, and the arts. Notable figures such as Ashok Mehra from New Delhi, Ritesh Mehta from Nahan, and Suraj Ratan from Dharamshala, who are part of the festival jury, were present.
Special guests included former Principal of Vallabh Government College Ashok Awasthi, educationist Narpat Rana, Professor Dharam Pal Kapoor, councillor Sarita Handa, and Professor Chaman Premi. A vibrant crowd of young attendees also contributed to the festival's lively atmosphere.
The event was hosted by Kuldeep Guleria, a former District Public Relations Officer and a dedicated advocate for Himachal's folk arts and cultural heritage.
With a focus on international cinema complemented by cultural programs, the Shakh Mandi Mahotsav aims to foster a unique public space in the city—one where cinema is not just viewed but actively discussed and experienced as a mirror of society.
For Mandi, a region celebrated for its rich cultural legacy, this festival enhances its evolving identity as a hub for artistic and cultural expression.
