Shafali Verma Confident Ahead of Crucial Match Against Australia in T20 World Cup
Shafali Verma's Optimism for the Upcoming Clash
Indian opener Shafali Verma is optimistic about the Women's team, known as the Women in Blue, securing a victory against Australia in their final league match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup. She recognizes the formidable reputation of the six-time champions but emphasizes that India has triumphed over them in the past.
India's Position in the Tournament
Currently, India holds the second position in the standings with three wins and one loss, totaling six points. Their fate regarding a semifinal berth will be determined in the upcoming match against Australia at Lord's on Sunday. South Africa, positioned third with six points, also has a match against a weaker Bangladesh team, making it crucial for India to secure a decisive win.
Recent Success Against Australia
In a pre-match discussion at JioStar's 'Match Centre Live', Shafali reflected on India's recent 2-1 T20 series victory over Australia in February, which has bolstered their confidence. She stated, "Everyone knows Australia are a world-class team. But it's not like we haven't beaten them before. That win gives us confidence. We have faced them for years, and we understand their bowlers and strategies. We need to keep things simple and trust our strengths. Overthinking complicates things."
Shafali's Personal Growth in Batting
Shafali has shown impressive form in the tournament, scoring two fifties, although she started with a disappointing six runs against Pakistan. She acknowledged her improvement since that match, admitting to having overthought her approach. "I realized I don't need to complicate things. I focus on watching the ball and reacting rather than planning too far ahead. This change has allowed me to score more freely and relieve pressure on myself. I aim to maintain this mindset in the crucial game against Australia," she explained.
Performance Statistics
In the tournament, Shafali has accumulated 145 runs across four matches, averaging 36.25 with a strike rate exceeding 157.60, and her highest score being 55. In 15 T20Is this year, she has scored 405 runs at an average of 27.00 and a strike rate above 148, including four fifties and a top score of 64.
Approach to Batting
Shafali emphasized the importance of not forcing shots that aren't working. She focuses on rotating the strike and only plays aggressive shots when the ball is in her hitting zone. "If my shots aren't coming off, I take singles to keep the scoreboard ticking. Batting should be straightforward—take singles, rotate the strike, and play along the ground when necessary. I respect good deliveries and look for ones and twos. This approach has been key to my learning: stay calm, watch the ball, and react accordingly," she concluded.
