Winter Storm Warning Issued

A significant winter storm is approaching seven states in the western United States this week. The National Weather Service has issued warnings indicating that travel may become "impossible" in certain regions due to heavy snowfall, strong winds, and subzero temperatures expected from Wednesday through Friday.

States Under Alert

States Affected

Winter storm warnings and weather advisories are currently active in Montana, Wyoming, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, with most alerts lasting until Thursday and some extending into Friday, according to reports.

Montana and Wyoming Facing Heavy Snow

Montana and Wyoming

Montana and Wyoming are predicted to experience the most severe conditions, with forecasts suggesting up to 18 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 60 mph in the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains. These conditions are expected to persist until Friday morning. The Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, along with parts of Yellowstone National Park, may also see similar snowfall amounts and winds of 45 mph through Thursday evening.

In other regions of Montana, snowfall between 5 to 12 inches is anticipated in the Gallatin, Madison, and Centennial Mountains, with the risk of heavy, wet snow causing power outages and fallen branches. The Snowy and Judith Mountains could receive up to 12 inches, with gusts reaching 55 mph.

Idaho's Mountain Passes at Risk

Idaho

Travelers on highways connecting Montana and Idaho should brace for significant disruptions, with forecasts predicting up to 12 inches of snow in the highest mountain passes. Hazardous road conditions, potential closures, and infrastructure issues are likely through Friday midday. Central Idaho, including the Sawtooth and Lost River Range, may see up to 9 inches of snow and winds of 40 mph from Wednesday into Thursday morning.

California and Nevada Prepare for Strong Winds

California and Nevada

California is expected to experience some of the strongest winds associated with this storm system. The Lake Tahoe region could see gusts up to 90 mph at higher elevations, with snowfall reaching 10 inches at altitude and around 3 inches at lake level. Mono County is likely to face similar conditions, with gusts hitting 90 mph and up to 10 inches of snow above 7,000 feet. The northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades may receive between 6 to 12 inches of snow, with the highest peaks potentially seeing up to 18 inches and winds of 50 mph. The NWS has also cautioned about isolated lightning along the Sierra Crest on Wednesday afternoon.

Oregon and Washington Snowfall Predictions

Oregon and Washington

In Oregon, regions above 4,500 feet in the Blue Mountains could receive between 4 to 12 inches of snow and winds of 50 mph through Wednesday. In Washington, the northwestern Blue Mountains are expected to see similar snowfall and wind conditions through Wednesday evening.

Utah's Cold Temperatures

Utah Bracing for Subfreezing Temperatures

Although Utah is not expected to receive heavy snowfall, residents are being warned about dangerously low temperatures from Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Areas in southwest Utah and the Sanpete and Sevier Valleys could experience lows as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit, which poses a risk to crops and outdoor plumbing.
