Tragic Impact of Severe Weather in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is currently grappling with the devastating effects of extreme weather, with the death toll rising to 111 due to incidents involving thunderstorms, falling debris, and lightning strikes. Dr. Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod, the Revenue Secretary and Relief Commissioner, reported that a meeting was held with district officials to assess the situation over the past 24 to 36 hours. According to the Relief Commissioner, 107 fatalities were caused by being crushed under debris and fallen trees, while four individuals lost their lives due to lightning. Additionally, a total of 72 people have sustained injuries.
Government Response and Relief Measures
In light of the unseasonal rains, storms, and lightning damage, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to provide immediate relief to the affected individuals within 24 hours. Reports indicate that 170 livestock have perished, and 227 homes have suffered partial or complete damage. The administration has gathered information regarding the extent of the damage from district officials, revealing that 22 districts in Uttar Pradesh have been severely impacted by the adverse weather conditions.
Emergency Relief Operations Underway
District magistrates have been directed to conduct relief and rescue operations on a war footing. The Relief Commissioner stated that the process for distributing ex gratia payments has commenced in accordance with government guidelines, with monitoring being conducted from the central office. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized the need to expedite relief efforts in the affected areas. Officials have also noted that emergency helpline number 1070 is receiving continuous calls, and actions are being taken accordingly.
