Islamabad, May 20: Recent heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, have resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and left 11 others injured, as reported by local news outlets on Wednesday.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) indicated that the fatalities occurred in Mardan, while injuries were recorded in Battagram, Swat, and Mardan, according to The Express Tribune.
As detailed in the PDMA report, Battagram saw four injuries, Mardan had one, and Swat reported six. The severe weather has also led to significant damage to homes and infrastructure across various districts.
Specifically, three houses in Shangla and one in Battagram were completely destroyed, with an additional 27 homes suffering partial damage, including five in Torghar, two in Swat, and one each in Upper Dir and Mardan. A school in Shangla was also affected by the adverse weather conditions.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted dust storms and rain with intermittent breaks in the upper regions of Pakistan until May 23.
In a previous incident in April, three individuals lost their lives and 14 were injured due to rain-related events in the districts of Peshawar, Mohmand, and Nowshera within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Bilal Ahmad Faizi, a spokesperson for Rescue 1122, reported that a child died and two others were injured when a roof collapsed in the Mattani area of Peshawar. Additionally, three family members were hurt in a rain-related incident in the Mohmand tribal district, as noted by Dawn.
In another similar occurrence in Ekkaghund tehsil, five individuals sustained injuries, and a man died when a room collapsed due to heavy rainfall in the Sra Khawa area of Baizai.
Rescue officials also reported that four people were injured in a roof collapse in the Dawezai Dawat Kor area of Mohmand district.
Moreover, livestock losses and damage to standing crops due to the rain have resulted in significant financial setbacks for the affected communities.
