Aizawl, Apr 29: Schools across Aizawl, Serchhip, and Lunglei districts in Mizoram remained shut for a second consecutive day on Wednesday due to ongoing heavy rainfall and strong winds affecting the region.

In the southern districts of Hnahthial and Lawngtlai, which had previously stayed open on Tuesday, authorities also decided to close schools on Wednesday, as confirmed by school education director Angela Zothanpuii.

Officials from all five districts made this decision as a precautionary measure to ensure safety, she added.

The Aizawl district administration highlighted that the continuous rainfall has heightened the risk of landslides, mudflows, rockfalls, and flash floods.

Since Monday, Mizoram has been facing intense rainfall along with gusty winds, causing significant damage across the state.

The State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department reported that over 70 houses, several church halls, schools, and government buildings sustained damage due to storms between Monday and Tuesday.

Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties so far, according to the department.

Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that Aizawl experienced the highest rainfall of 57.8 mm in the past 24 hours. Other areas significantly impacted included Mamit (47.5 mm), Khawzawl (35.5 mm), Serchhip (34.5 mm), and Siaha (34 mm).

The weather forecast predicts that heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, will continue until Friday in Aizawl, Kolasib, Mamit, Champhai, and Serchhip.

Additionally, wind speeds of 50 to 60 km/h are anticipated in Kolasib on Wednesday and in Aizawl on Thursday, as per the weather office's report.
