Natural Disaster Strikes Kathua District

Following the recent calamity in Kishtwar, Kathua district has also experienced devastating weather conditions. A cloudburst in a remote village resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and left six others injured. This tragic event occurred during the night between Saturday and Sunday. Previously, a similar incident in Kishtwar claimed over 60 lives.

Impact on Local Infrastructure

According to officials, the cloudburst caused several homes in the village to be buried under debris and floodwaters. Access routes to the village have been blocked, complicating rescue operations. However, a joint team from the police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has arrived at the scene to carry out rescue efforts.

Ongoing Rescue and Relief Operations

Authorities reported that the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway has also suffered damage due to this incident. Landslides have occurred in the villages of Bagd, Changda, and Dilwan-Hutli, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Kathua police station, but no significant damage has been reported there. Heavy rainfall has caused water levels in most reservoirs in the area to rise rapidly, with the Ujh River nearing danger levels. The district administration has urged residents to stay away from water bodies for their safety.

Condolences from Leaders

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the swift recovery of the injured, assuring that all possible assistance would be provided to those affected.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also conveyed his sympathies to the victims' families. He expressed his grief on the social media platform X, stating, 'I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the devastating landslides caused by rain in several areas of Kathua. This tragedy is truly shocking.' He mentioned that he is in constant contact with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, providing updates on the rescue and relief operations. Teams from the army, NDRF, SDRF, and police are collaborating to carry out relief efforts, and senior officials have been instructed to ensure coordination and assistance in the affected areas.
