As heavy rainfall continues across several states, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms and gusty winds in various regions over the next four to five days. The IMD has also forecasted significant rainfall in different parts of Kerala in the coming three to four days, issuing a red alert for eight districts in the state.
Red Alert in Kerala and School Closures
The IMD has placed a red alert for heavy rain in eight districts of Kerala, including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Kozhikode. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for six districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Thrissur. Due to the anticipated heavy rainfall, district administrations across Kerala have declared a holiday for all educational institutions on May 30.
Impact of Heavy Rain in Kerala
Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated on Thursday that the early onset of the monsoon has led to severe rainfall, causing extensive damage in the state. He urged residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate to safer locations or relief camps. During a press conference, he noted that water levels in rivers and other water bodies are rising, advising caution for those engaging in activities near these areas. Fishermen were also warned to heed advisories before venturing out to sea.
Orange Alert for Delhi
An orange alert has been issued for parts of the national capital as rain is expected on Thursday night, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. The IMD reported that light to moderate rain, along with lightning and winds reaching speeds of 40 to 70 kilometers per hour, is likely in various locations across Delhi and the National Capital Region. The orange alert indicates potential adverse weather conditions, prompting residents to remain vigilant.
Storm Predictions for Andhra Pradesh
The IMD has forecasted thunderstorms in Andhra Pradesh until May 31. The department indicated that areas in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAAP), Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAAP), and Rayalaseema could experience thunderstorms with lightning and winds up to 50 kilometers per hour.
Rain and Storms Expected in Rajasthan
The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in Rajasthan over the next two days. Areas including Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Ajmer, and Jaipur are expected to experience these weather conditions. Furthermore, alerts for heavy rainfall have been issued for several districts in West Bengal and Odisha, particularly in coastal regions, prompting warnings for fishermen to avoid going to sea.
Bengaluru's Flood Management Measures
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Thursday that he has instructed municipal authorities in Bengaluru to demolish buildings obstructing natural rainwater flow, which contribute to flooding. He visited areas recently affected by heavy rainfall to assess the situation, particularly inspecting drains near the Manayata Tech Park that were responsible for recent flooding.
