Southeastern Wisconsin is preparing for another challenging weather episode. A flood watch has been activated for a significant portion of the area, as meteorologists monitor a hazardous storm system currently moving through Iowa, which is expected to reach Wisconsin soon.

Counties Affected by the Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has announced a flood watch for all of southeastern Wisconsin, effective from noon until 11 p.m. on Thursday. The counties included in this alert are Dodge, Fond du Lac, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha. Heavy rainfall and runoff may cause rivers, creeks, and streams to overflow. Areas with low elevation, inadequate drainage, and urban neighborhoods are particularly vulnerable to flooding, according to the weather service.

Elevated Risk of Severe Storms

In addition to the flood threat, the Storm Prediction Center has categorized Racine, Kenosha, and Walworth counties with a level 4 out of 5 risk for severe weather, while the remainder of the region is at a level 3 out of 5. Potential hazards include hail, strong winds, tornadoes, and flooding. A powerful storm front is currently advancing through Iowa and may shift northeast into Wisconsin. As of Wednesday morning, severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were already in effect along this storm line.

This week's weather system is not the last one residents should be concerned about. Additional storm opportunities are forecasted for Saturday evening, as well as on Tuesday and Wednesday of the following week.
