Indore Faces Major Water Contamination Crisis

Indore, January 1, 2026: Indore, recognized as the cleanest city in the country for eight consecutive years, is currently grappling with a significant water crisis. Contamination of the water supply has occurred in the Bhagirathpura area due to drainage and sewage water infiltrating the Narmada pipeline. This has resulted in a widespread outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea, claiming the lives of eight individuals and leaving over 1,000 others ill.

Initial investigations revealed a leak in the main Narmada pipeline located directly beneath a public toilet near the Bhagirathpura police station. The contaminated water from the toilet was mixing with the drinking water supply, leading to toxic water distribution throughout the area. The negligence of the municipal corporation has come to light, as residents had been reporting issues with dirty water for several weeks.
