A powerful tornado was confirmed near Lena, Illinois, on Friday afternoon, leading to an urgent warning from the National Weather Service urging residents to take immediate cover. The storm, categorized as a 'particularly dangerous situation' (PDS), was detected at 3:47 PM CDT, approximately 9 miles northwest of Freeport, and was moving eastward at a speed of 25 mph.



The tornado warning is in effect until 4:15 PM CDT for northeastern Jo Daviess County and Stephenson County. Weather spotters have confirmed the tornado's presence, and officials have warned of a significant threat to life and property. The alert emphasized, 'This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. TAKE COVER NOW!'


Authorities highlighted the gravity of the situation, indicating that residents are facing a 'life-threatening situation' due to the risk of deadly debris. The National Weather Service has detailed the anticipated impacts, predicting that mobile homes could be destroyed and significant damage to homes, businesses, and vehicles is likely. Complete destruction in some areas is also a possibility.


The tornado's expected trajectory includes several communities, such as Freeport, Cedarville, Winslow, Buena Vista, Oneco, Orangeville, McConnell, Red Oak, Scioto Mills, and Damascus. Additional areas like Afolkey and Dakota Dornink Airport were projected to be affected around 3:55 PM CDT, with Dakota and Winneshiek following around 4:00 PM CDT.


Officials are urging residents to take immediate action, recommending that those in the affected regions move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows. Individuals outdoors, in vehicles, or in mobile homes should seek substantial shelter without delay.


Authorities also cautioned that heavy rainfall could hinder visibility of the tornado, making it challenging to see or hear it approaching. 'Do not wait to see or hear the tornado.
