The National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln declared an Extreme-level tornado warning for southeastern Coles County and northeastern Cumberland County, labeling the situation as a "particularly dangerous scenario" that required immediate action from residents. Weather observers confirmed the tornado's presence as it moved eastward at around 40 mph. The storm hit Charleston just before 7 p.m. CDT, with reports of power outages surfacing as the tornado traversed the area. Videos shared on social media depicted storm chasers documenting the event and advising residents to take cover immediately. One storm chaser tweeted: "Tornado emergency in Charleston, IL. Power knocked out as I was clearing out of the town to the east. We are LIVE!"

National Weather Service Issues Rare Emergency Warning

At 6:57 p.m. CDT, the NWS confirmed a large and extremely dangerous tornado was located over Charleston and moving eastward. Officials cautioned that the tornado posed a significant threat to life and property, with the potential to obliterate mobile homes, severely damage residences and businesses, and cause extensive destruction along its path.

"This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. TAKE COVER NOW!" the agency emphasized in its warning bulletin. The NWS highlighted that flying debris could be lethal for anyone outdoors or without adequate shelter. Emergency managers alerted residents that total destruction of certain structures was possible if the tornado maintained its strength.

Forecasts indicated that the storm would reach Ashmore shortly after passing through Charleston, threatening additional communities in its path.

Tornado Threat Expands Beyond Illinois

Meteorologists also cautioned that the larger storm system responsible for the tornado in Charleston was anticipated to move into Indiana later that evening. Forecasters noted that the tornado threat was escalating along parts of the Interstate 70 corridor as severe thunderstorms advanced eastward. Weather authorities urged residents in affected areas to stay alert for updates and be ready for rapidly changing conditions. The tornado warning encompassed parts of Coles, Cumberland, and Douglas counties, including regions near Loxa, Fox Ridge State Park, and sections of Interstate 57. Authorities recommended that residents immediately seek shelter in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Those traveling in vehicles, mobile homes, or outdoors were advised to find substantial shelter without delay. Emergency officials are continuing to monitor the situation as assessment teams prepare to evaluate potential damage once the storm passes.
