Evacuation Ordered Amid Thunderstorm Warnings
On Saturday evening, as thousands celebrated the Fourth of July at the National Mall, they were abruptly instructed to evacuate due to the approach of severe thunderstorms. The National Weather Service had issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the area, leading officials to advise attendees at the Great American State Fair and other nearby events to find shelter without delay.
The DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency guided the crowds towards various federal buildings and museums, including the Ronald Reagan Building, the Department of Commerce, and several national museums such as the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which were designated as safe havens.
Additionally, severe thunderstorm warnings were also announced for regions in Virginia, particularly southeastern Culpeper and Fauquier counties, with meteorologists indicating that the storms could affect the Washington, DC area between 5 PM and 7:30 PM.
